Not wanting to travel far today we had decided on this walk along the lovely top of Whitbarrow the previous evening. We were parked up for around 9:30am and soon onto the ridge. This is one of Ediths favourite places. The ridge of Whitbarrow holds many lovely spots for those who care to seek them out.
Route Map
Having parked the car we walked first along the old road (l) and then the farm lane (r) to Raven's Lodge. For those feeling the need to park closer there is limited parking available just past Raven's Lodge at the old quarry.
Raven's Lodge.
We are now walking up through the old quarry.
The path carries on through the old quarry.....
....until eventually a gate is reached. A little further on is this seat (l) and to its left a narrow path slopes upward through the trees (r)
Eventually the path reaches a stone wall. Pass through the wall and almost immediately pass back through it....you'll see why if you go.
After another short walk through the woods you will arrive out on the open fellside.
A look back into the gloom reveals views across to Arnside Knott and down Morecambe Bay to the Power Stations at Heysham.
A distant Ingleborough across the Kent estuary.
It looks really murky to south of us.
Fortunately ahead of us it looks a little brighter.
A flicker of sunlight on the summit as we approach Chapel Head Scars.
A big zoom reveals brighter things ahead, but will it last.
Looking over Scout Scar towards the Whinfell Ridge
Hazy Eastern & Far Eastern Fells.
Could it possibly be getting a little brighter.
There's certainly more blue about.
We are well into the nature reserve now with the summit away to our left.
It's still gloomy to the south of us however.
The final walk up to the top.
Almost there!....The cairn at the summit.
To the west of us is Cartmel Fell (Raven's Barrow) with the top of Gummer's How just peeping over the top in the centre picture.
Zooming in on the Langdale valley
The Fairfield Horseshoe and Red Screes to the left of the Kirkstone Pass.
And to the right a multitude of Far Eastern Fells.
Over Cunswick Fell and Scout Scar to the Whinfell Ridge.
Him & Her at the Lord's Seat cairn
Making our way down to the forest.
Entry to the forest is over the wall on the right.
We followed the RoW down for a while but when it turned off to the left we carried on ahead preferring the easier forest track which will join back onto the RoW further along.
The forest tracks are continually changing as harvesting continues so if you are not familiar with the area keep an eye on your map.
A look over to Scout Scar as we near Rawsons
Rawsons....our path had come out of the woods at the far end.
The entrepreneurial spirit lives on at Raven's Lodge.
And finally....a look back at White Scar as we make our way back to the car.
