Awakening to a glorious morning we were away straight after breakfast and arrived at Great Wood shortly after 9am. My original intention had been to catch one of the ferries back to Keswick from Nichol End but the scones were so huge we missed it and decided to walk through the hell that is Keswick on a glorious July afternoon. That apart it was a splendid walk which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Route Map

We parked the car in the car park at Great Wood (Free to NT members) I had expected to see a few cars there but there was only other when we arrived.

A short walk down to the shores of Derwent Water and it looks like we have struck it lucky.

Looking between the foot of Catbells and Swinside to Barrow and Grisedale Pike.

It was actually difficult to keep walking. All we wanted to do was to stand and admire the views.

There was work in progress at the Ashness Bridge landing stage.

A look up Borrowdale as we make our way along Barrow Bay

And a look back from around the same place.

The crags of Maiden Moor and High Spy across Derwent Water.

We left the waterside when we reached the Kettlewell Car Park to take a path through the woods towards the Lodore Hotel.

On the road for a short while now and a look back from near the path to the Lodore landing just visible on the far right.

Some big place that I can't afford.

We rejoined the path around Derwent Water just past the hotel.

Looking south to Grange Crags and King's How with High Spy to the right.

And a look to the north from near the Chinese Bridge.

The "Chinese Bridge" spans the River Derwent just before it flows into Derwent Water.

View from the Great Bay with Walla Crag on the far right.

From Abbot's Bay Blencathra is now in view between Skiddaw and Walla Crag as a dog goes scuba diving for a stone.

Passing Brandelhow

Brandelhow Bay

One for the granddaughters .....Edith on the Entrust Sculpture.

This wooden sculpture of cupped hands commemorates the centenary of the National Trust's first ever land purchase, 108 acres of the Brandelhow estate. A plaque reads:
"Celebrating 100 Years Of
The National Trust
Caring For Your Countryside
At Brandelhow
2002

Brandelhow landing

A view of Catbells as we make our way towards Hawes End.

Passing by the Outdoor Centre.

A short walk brought us to Nichol End and the highlight of the day.....If you haven't tried the scones at the cafe here you have missed a treat.

Skiddaw Fells from Nichol End.....The plan had been to catch the launch across to Keswick from here but the scones are so huge we missed it and decided to walk.

We walked from Nichol End through Portinscale to cross the River Derwent on our way to Keswick.

Latrigg as we make our way to Keswick.

The Skiddaws

North Western delight

It was bedlam walking through Keswick, not my favourite place on a sunny July afternoon.

We did however enjoy an ice-cream in Hope Park.

Causey Pike across a busy Keswick waterside.

Catbells and Causey Pike from Friar's Crag.

Walla Crag as we make our way back to the car.

And now a very busy car park.

The Calendar season is upon us again. I have had a number of enquiries as to whether I will be producing a calendar this year. Once again the answer is no as I have neither the inclination to do so, or to make money out of what I enjoy. We normally support the R.N.L.I and Mountain Rescue in purchasing our calendars directly from them. However readers may be interested in this one from the Friends of the Lake District....At only £8.00 it offers good value for money and you will know that the monies raised will go the the only charity wholly dedicated to protecting Cumbria's landscape for the future. Just clicking on the picture will take you to the website.

Next Walk:      29th July 2011 - Arnside & Silverdale AONB - A Northern Tour.

Last Walk:       26th July 2011 - Lake District - 100 Up....On The Helm
