A walk, starting at Pelter Bridge Rydal around Rydal Water and Grasmere using the delightful Loughrigg Terrace and waterside paths on the outward leg and returning along the old Grasmere - Rydal Corpse Road. Two tea stops along the way, one at Faeryland Grasmere and the other at Rydal Hall.

Route Map

We left the car at the Pelter Bridge car park and walked up the lane to gain access to the path to Loughrigg Terrace. Rydal Water looking very peaceful.

A look back to Nab Scar as we make our way towards the old workings.

The bottom working.

And the more popular Loughrigg cave.

Looking over Rydal Water towards White Moss Common.

From the cave our route followed the track of Loughrigg Terrace with Silver How ahead.

A Golden-ringed Dragonfly.....a male I think.

Edith had decided to bring the old camera today after using it at Muncaster. It wasn't long before she got fed up with it though and decided to just enjoy the views.

As we followed the terrace path along the views over Grasmere started to open up.

Helm Crag & Steel Fell to the left of Dunmail Raise and Seat Sandal, Great Rigg and Heron Pike to the right.

At the end of the terrace route we took the path down through the woods to the shore of Grasmere.

The day unfortunately was starting to close in a little with a covering of high white cloud.

It was decision time here 1) to carry on to Grasmere or 2) return via White Moss and Rydal. I was feeling OK so we decided to carry on.

A look back to Loughrigg as we walk along the waterside towards Grasmere.

A bit of sun would have given some good reflections, however they weren't that bad.

The island on Grasmere framed between Helm Crag (l) and Seat Sandal (r)

Eventually we had to leave the waterside for the short road walk into Grasmere.

Faeryland had just nicely opened....seemed like a good idea to stop.

Looking to Loughrigg from Faeryland.

Suitably refreshed we walked through Grasmere....

.....passing the sports field...

......and Dove Cottage to gain access to....

....The old Corpse Road at the Resting Stone.

Gaining a little height along the Corpse Road and a bit of blue is returning to the sky....

....but not yet unfortunately over Wansfell.

A definite improvement now...

.....and even better now.....tea & scone please!

There's not much water coming down Rydal Beck

The Grot and Lower Falls.

Rydal Hall

And finally.....back to the car park.

The Calendar season is upon us again. I have had a number of enquiries as to whether I will be producing a calendar this year. Once again the answer is no as I have neither the inclination to do so, or to make money out of what I enjoy. We normally support the R.N.L.I and Mountain Rescue in purchasing our calendars directly from them. However readers may be interested in this one from the Friends of the Lake District....At only £8.00 it offers good value for money and you will know that the monies raised will go the the only charity wholly dedicated to protecting Cumbria's landscape for the future. Just clicking on the picture will take you to the website.

Next Walk:      5th August 2011 - Lake District - Great & Little Langdale

Last Walk:       2nd August 2011 - NW Lancashire - The Shore & Canal at Hest Bank.
