Most folk when "doing" Latterbarrow will commence their walk from the car park at nearby Hawkshead and follow AW's route via Colthouse. This is fine, but if like me you want nothing to do with huge car parks and the associated charges then alternatives must be found. There are a few parking places on the Colthouse to Wray road but they are few and far between and soon taken. We prefer this route as it gives us the opportunity of an early morning lakeside walk first.

Route Map

We left the car at the roadside near the gatehouse to Wray Castle.

The walk along the lane to Wray Castle afforded some nice views, here looking to Black Fell....

....and here to a cloud topped Coniston Old Man and Brim Fell with a cloud free Wetherlam to the right.

Wray Castle.

From Wray Castle we walked down to the shore of Windermere with a nice view of the Fairfield Horseshoe with Red Screes to the right.

The landing stage at Low Wray Bay with the Low Wood Hotel across Windermere.

The boathouse at Low Wray Bay.

We set off heading southwards towards Watbarrow Point.

Watbarrow Point is a wonderful spot to watch the lake come to life on an early morning.

Continuing along the shore we made our way to Epley Point....

....and around High Wray Bay where we left the shore to take a path upwards to High Wray.

A glimpse of the Langdale Pikes as we made our way to High Wray.

A look back.

A short stroll along the road towards Hawkshead soon had us at the track leading to Basecamp which we followed.

Looking back to the Fairfield Fells....

....and to Red Screes and Wansfell.

After passing through a gate with a multitude of locks hanging from it we followed this track a short way until the waymarker on the right.

The path at first passed through some woods before exiting onto the open fellside.

There were fine views to the Coniston Fells and....

....towards the Langdale Fells as we made our way to the summit.

Close-up Pike O'Blisco, Crinkle Crags and Bowfell.

The now cloud free Fairfield Horseshoe.

Red Screes, Caudale Moor and Wansfell.

Some Far Eastern delight.

Latterbarrow summit and its elegant obelisk.

After a short break we made our way down to the road.

We followed the road back towards High Wray for a while before taking the lane down to Hole House to pick up a path back to the car.

Fairfield Fells over Blelham Tarn.

Red Screes, Caudale Moor and Wansfell as we make our way back.

She had been trying to avoid the camera all the way but this was my "Gotcha" moment.

And finally.....back to the car.
