The day had started just the opposite to yesterday. It was dull and at times a little drizzly but around 1015hrs it started to brighten. I wasn't sure where to go or what to do as I had finished yesterdays walk very tired and my right knee which I have had problems with over the years was giving a few problems. However I wanted to do a bit of something so we set off for Sunderland for a walk around Sunderland Point. I debated starting the walk from Carr Lane at Middleton to add a couple of miles to the walk but Edith suggested we start from Overton and walk along the raised flood embankment to Sunderland. Surprisingly this is something that I haven't done before usually using the field paths but Edith said she had done it a few time as as a youngster and couldn't remember any problems......read on.

Our Route

We left the car at Overton in the car park opposite the Globe Hotel. The usual way to walk to Sunderland from here is either along the road (tidal) or across the fields with the start point being along the lane below us. Following Edith's childhood memories we however decided to follow the flood embankment and at first there seems no problem.

It appears to be well used and is easy walking.

There was a minor problem here. We had approached from the other side of the gate and found it locked and with barbed wire along the top. However we dropped down to the lane where part of the fence was down and then through the metal gate to get back on the embankment.

Looking across to the Hall Greaves as a van makes it way across the tidal road to Sunderland.

Looking across to Trailholme...

The power stations dominate the skyline.

A look back and we have had no problems up to here. However from this point the gates were across the embankment were locked and in the distance there appeared to be hedging across it, so rather than go further we diverted across the field to pick up the field path....

eventually to rejoin it near the end.

Now on familiar territory we made our way towards First Terrace.

There's some work to be done here.

Looking back towards Overton...

...and across the River Lune to a hazy Clougha Pike.

First Terrace.

A peek over the wall into a small wooded area revealed the daffodils were flowering....

...but we were a bit surprised to see this Primrose.

A look back as we reach Second Terrace.

Second Terrace.

Crocuses in flower as we make our way towards the Old Hall.

Sunderland Hall

A look back as we approach the point...

...and across the River Lune towards Crook Farm where we were yesterday.

Making our way around the eroded point.

Erosion is an ongoing process.

Having rounded the point our return starts along the West Shore.

We found a suitable tree stump to sit on to enjoy our coffee....

....and I couldn't resist a big close up of my pension provider at Heysham.

Meanwhile in the the nearby hedgerow we were being watched.

Coffee taken we made our way to the grave.

Samboo's Grave.....immaculate as always....

....and the stones are still there.

From the grave it was just a short walk to The Lane which would return us to First Terrace.

More primroses in the sheltered lane.

All that remains is to follow the road back.

Crossing Wood Bridge.

Nearly there!!

And finally....back at Overton.
