21st May 2009

Today not wanting to travel far as the weather forecast was a bit of a mixed bag we decided to go to the Silverdale area. I wanted to have a short walk but to keep it level. We ended up doing 2 short walks with a visit to the Visitor Centre at Leighton Moss in between. Both walks in total only amounted to about 3.75miles and a couple of hundred feet of ascent but it was lovely to be out.

We stopped on the promenade at Morecambe for this view across the bay.

I hadn't a clue where we were going to walk when we set off. However as I parked up at Crag Foot I decided to visit a spot we have never been to before.

We must have walked past this sign scores of time but have never taken the time to visit.

The area belongs to the RSPB at Leighton Moss but is situated about 15minutes walk or a few minutes drive from the Visitor Centre

The Allen Hide

I lay no claim to being a "twitcher" not having enough patience to sit and wait.

Looking towards Jenny Browns point.

A similar view but now taken from the Eric Morecambe hide.

Mission accomplished we returned to the car

A look to Crag Foot as we returned to the car

Next stop was just up the road at the RSPB Visitor Centre.

Being careful not to upset the local residents.

Suitably refreshed we had a short drive to Yealand Storrs...

Where we took the bridleway which was wet and muddy in places through Yealand Hall Allotment

We only saw one of these as we walked through the allotment. I'm sure someone will identify it.

Nature can beat the Landscape Gardener with these wonderful limestone rockeries.

Locals taking a midday siesta

This is where we left the bridleway to take the path across what is known as the West Coppice.

Entering the Gait Barrows National Nature reserve.

This was our destination....The deightful tarn of Hawes Water

After a short stay we started to make our way back to the car

Back again....
