23rd September 2009

No time for a proper walk today due to family committments but we did manage a quick dash up the A6 to Levens Park for a walk up & down the park followed by a bit to eat in the cafe at Levens Hall.

It was a lovely afternoon, certainly a whole lot better than when we were last here with Jill Bachelor & family.

We walked up the east side of the river to the top of the park

Feeding time....bit old for this though.

Could this be Dad?

At the top of the park we left the RoW to follow the river back down

As we made our way back we noticed this "feature". Comprising of an outer circle approximately 30 yards in diameter with a smaller inner circle inside. The circles are made of a raised banking and stones. It is not marked on any OS map I have. This is all I have been able to find out about it.

"The site, now partially reconstructed, appears to have been a mound or cairn with a boulder Kerb sealing two earlier features with graves".
An area of previous settlement was chosen and perhaps delineated by a ring bank, used for burial on at least three occasions. The funery area which included a hut like structure was then sealed by a mound".
