On our way to Derwentwater for a walk I decided to drive down the "quiet" side of the Thirlmere reservoir to see if I could get some reflections. I was partly successful the results being somwhat spoilt by the sun. Until around 1894 the Wythburn valley contained two small tarns Leathes Water and Wythburn Water but the need for water in industrial Manchester meant that the decision was taken to build a dam which would raise the water level in the valley by a full 50feet submerging cottages, farms and an ancient hall. The dam stands 58feet high and 857feet long.
