25th November 2009

After a few days stuck in the house not feeling 100% and probably not keen on the weather we decided to have a run out just after midday. The weatherman was giving it to become brighter but unfortunately this never happened. The afternoon was a mixture of wind and showers. Our trip took us along the lower Lune Valley to see how it had fared over the last few days.

First Stop...The Crook O'Lune and the river is just between its banks but about 8' higher than normal. The fields to the sides have been flooded but are now above the river level.

The road bridge from the old railway bridge and the water was rushing by the piers.

The river is at least 8' above its normal level, maybe more and as been at least 6 or 8 feet higher

The old rail bridge from the road bridge.

Next stop...Hornby and this is the normally sedate River Wenning before it merges with the Lune

The Wenning weir with Hornby Castle behind

Next stop...The Loyn Bridge near Hornby. Last week the road where I am stood was under water.

The River Lune downstream of the Loyn Bridge

The swans are happier in the flooded field about 70 yards from the river.

Finally....Kirkby Lonsdale and the River Lune from Devil's Bridge

A walk into the town for Fish & Chips at the cafe in Jingling Lane before a visit to the church.

St Mary's Church at Kirkby Lonsdale

Ruskin's View...This view from the brow behind St Mary's Church inspired the artist Turner to paint it and the author John Ruskin to write about it.....None too pretty today!!

On our way back to the car walking along the Main Street we were stopped by the guy walking in the road in the RH picture. He recognised Edith as she worked for his father about 25 years ago....wish I could remember faces and names like that!!
