8th January 2009

Firstly dear reader I must apologise for the lack of entries of late. This is due in no small way to the cold weather affecting my breathing. As soon as I breathe in the cold air I can feel the tightness in my chest and not wanting it to turn to something more nasty I have been keeping inside. However around noon today I was going as they say "stir crazy" so we ventured out first for a short walk along the promenade at Morecambe and then for a short stroll along the Lancaster Canal at Tewitfield.

Walking towards Tewitfield aand the new development

People have been using the frozen canal as a short cut. Edith however was unwilling to try it out!

The entance to the new marina

This is the end of the navigable section of the canal. It was culverted here when the M6 was built.

We walked under the A6070 alongside the M6 for a short distance..

to rejoin what is now known as the Northern Reaches of the canal.

There are 8 locks along this length which now have weirs replacing the lock gates. The locks raised the canal 75feet in half a mile and were the only ones on the 57mile length between Preston & Kendal. They were in use from 1819 to 1942. From here we returned to the car.
