I had hoped to have a proper walk today bur with Edith visiting her brother and another dull day I just settled for a drive up the Lune valley to Hornby for a short walk there. The village straddles the A683 Lancaster - Kirkby Lonsdale road about 7 miles from Lancaster.
I left the car in a free car park just next to the bridge over the River Wenning to take a path down the eastern side of the river towards the River Lune.
To be truthful in the dull weather there wasn't a lot to see but the walking was easy along the riverside.
Looking across to Claughton Moor and Caton Moor. Claughton Moor supplies the clay for the brickworks at Claughton via aerial ropeways.
A look back with the top of Hornby Castle just visible on the right and Hornby Park wood to the left.
The way ahead towards Whinney Hill
Looking over Camp Ho to the wind turbines on Caton Moor.
My intention had been to do a circular route but just before I got to around this point there was a permissive path that I was unaware of which allowed be to continue to where the Rivers Wanning and Lune meet. Nearest to you is the Wenning with the Lune ahead flowing from right to left.
So plans changed I decided to walk down the Lune for a short way before retracing my steps.
On my way back and from here we can see the two rivers joining. Look carefully in centre of the pictures and you can just make out Middleton Fell and Barbon Fell.
Looking over the Wenning towards Priory Farm on the raised ground.
Almost back at Hornby.
A walk under the bridge to see the weir and Castle
Then up onto the bridge for a clearer view.
