21st July 2010
After what seemed to be an eternity of being stuck in the house and seriously considering a visit to B&Q for a supply of wood to build an ark around late morning today the day brightened. Edith was out visiting her brother so I decided to have a run up the Lune Valley stopping off for 3 short walks. They probably only amounted to 4 or 5 miles altogether so I have put them in this section rather than the walks.
My first stop....the Crook O'Lune.
The river is within its banks but quite high.
The path under the old railway bridge on the right is not far from being submerged.
Below the road bridge the river is quite swollen and running fast.
My next stop was at Hornby where the River Wenning was racing over the weir.
After a short walk I returned to the bridge over the Wenning.
Next stop...Kirkby Lonsdale...The River Lune from Devils Bridge.
The Devils Bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale.
I decided to walk up the riverside path to the town.
At this point you can walk up into the town...
...or carry along the narrow path which was only just clear of water....
....to the Radical Steps. They were named after the liberal views of a Dr Pearson, who had them built around 1830. 86 of them in total, I was huffing at puffing as I reached the top.
But with this view to savour the steps were quickly forgotten. Known as "Ruskin's View. It was praised by John Ruskin as "One of the loveliest views in England" and painted by J.M.W Turner.

The car park becomes a market on Thursdays.
Walking back to the car past the sports field.
Decision time.....A bacon bun or an ice-cream?.....I'll let you guess :-)
