14th January 2011

The day started dull but fine but by around 10am there was some brightness starting to appear to our south and west and so we decided to have a run out to Ambleside and take things from there. However as we headed northwards the brightness disappeared and we turned down into Bowness instead for a short walk around Cockshott Point. We were hoping that the day would improve but after a short walk and a pot of tea it started to rain heavily as we returned to the car. Tails between our legs we returned home only to find blue skies and sunshine so we parked in Heysham Village for a walk on the Barrows. Just a few pictures from the day which certainly aren't going to win any prizes.

The original plan had been to go to Ambleside. However we drove down to Bowness and parked near the Tourist Information Centre. From the shore of Windermere it certainly looked a bit brighter up the lake nearer Ambleside. We decided to walk down to Cockshott Point and then move on to Ambleside.

A very quiet morning with not many folk about as yet.

Looking up Windermere and there appears to be a little sunshine on the slopes of Wansfell at this point.

We walked down to Cockshott Point owned by the National Trust. Ahead of us is Belle Isle, the largest of the 18 islands on Windermere and the only one to have been inhabited.

Although the air temperature was around 8c it felt cooler at the waterside in a fresh breeze.

Looking down Windermere. Look really carefully and you can just see the Windermere Ferry leaving The Ferry House on the right hand side of the picture.

Our walk continued alongside the shoreline towards Ferry Nab.

The ferry can now be seen just right of centre. It is said that there as been a ferry crossing at this point for over 500 years. Originally rowing boats were used to be replaced by steam engine powered boats. The current ferry is  cable guided with room for up to 18 cars and 100 foot passengers.

At the end of this path you can either turn right to Ferry Nab or as we did go left back towards Bowness.

A look back.

Nearly back at Bowness.

The brightness towards Ambleside as gone.....

.....what to do next?

A nice brew and a toasted teacake seemed a good idea.

As we walked back to the car near the Information Office the heavens opened and a decision to return home made.

Meanwhile at home the brightness had given way to blue skies and sunny spells so we parked up in the village for a walk on the Barrows.
