23rd January 2012

Still not feeling 100% by a long way but not wanting to be stuck in the house any longer we decided to make the short journey to the RSPB's Leighton Moss reserve for a bit of a wander around. It was a bit of a showery day and plans were changed once or twice along the way but if you're in the area it is well worth a visit.

A stop on the promenade at Morecambe for a look across the bay from Scalestones Point.  Unless Morecambe Town Council and the artist Shane Johnstone can come to some sort of agreement over the Venus & Cupid statue it is due to be removed on Valentine's Day.

It was quite bright as we set off but as we approached Leighton Moss it started to rain quite heavily so we decided to go to Arnside first. It was fine when we arrived as can be seen but within minutes the rain had followed us so after sitting in the car a while....

....we made our way back to Leighton Moss where it was now fine but dull.

We didn't linger long at the feeding station as we wanted to get to the public hide before the next shower....

However just after passing the Dragonfly & Damselfly viewing area....

the heavens opened again. It didn't seem to bother these chappies but we beat a hasty retreat to the visitor centre for a brew and cake until it passed over.

Eventually the rain passed over and we made our way towards the public hide passing by the best area for viewing the starlings at dusk.

The start of the causeway across Leighton Moss.

Looking over the grit trays for the Bearded Tits towards Heald Brow.

Eventually we arrived at the public hide where the cormorants were still in attendace

The last two pictures were taken on a big zoom as can be seen....

....from this picture at the normal setting.

After a short walk down to my favourite spot we made our way back towards the visitor centre....

and a visit to the feeding station.
