We decided today to have a run out to the Fylde Coast first to Cleveleys to see the beached MV Riverdance and then to Fleetwood.
The MV Riverdance from the promenade at Cleveleys. The Riverdance was beached here in a bad storm at the beginning of February.
On a lovely sunny day there were a few people about even though it was only 10am
The Riverdance operates between Warrenpoint and Heysham twice per day.
I am told that all the fuel oil as now been taken off along with most of the containers.
While we waited for the tide to go out a little we took a walk along the new sea wall at Cleveleys. The terraced wall is designed to dissipate the energy of the waves. I must admit it looks a whole lot nicer than the limestone rocks at Morecambe.
With the ebbing tide it was possible to get nearer to the vessel but security have set up a no-go area around her quoting "Elf & Safety"
Cleveleys beach
One of the security people told me that on Friday attempts to "straighten up" the vessel would be made. This would include filling the now empty port side (the high side) fuel tanks with water to try to make her move back that way. An attempt to refloat her will be made on Sunday. There are two powerfull Dutch tugs waiting at Liverpool.
On the way home we stopped off at Fleetwood for which I must admit to having a soft spot for. I spent 12 months here in digs at 15/16 whilst attending the Fleetwood Nautical College.
The "Welcome Home" statue on the promenade. Every day Mothers & Children would stand here around high water to either wave goodbye or welcome home Husbands and Fathers who were employed on the deep sea trawlers.
A less happy memorial. This is in memory to all the Fleetwood trawlermen lost at sea whilst fishing or during the World Wars.
Looking across the River Wyre to Knott End. A ferry runs across to the jetty opposite but for whatever reason it is not running till the end of February.
