Visions of Cumbria

The purpose of this section is to show various pictures from Cumbria which do not normally appear on our walks pages. They may have been taken on a day out or maybe on the way to or back from one of our walks or sent in by one of our readers. Either way I hope that you will enjoy them.

17th March 2008

The pictures shown below were taken in the South Cumbrian hamlet of Troutbeck which incidentally is one of my favourite Cumbrian places. This is probably due to the village being no-commercialised. I know there is a large Chalet and Caravan park in the valley bottom and that there are a number of B&B's and Holiday Cottages in the area but in the main these cater for those who like their walking. The village seems to have been built around a series of wells and springs which adorn the roadside. It would be easy to spend an whole day here exploring the various buildings but I hope the few pictures shown here will give those who have never stopped there for long a chance to see what they missed.

The wells or springs of Troutbeck, of which there are many are dedicated to the Saints. This is St John's Well

St James Well

St Margarets Well

Probably one of Troutbecks most well known spots. Townend is a 17th Century farmhouse. Built in 1626 for George Browne a wealthy farmer and his new bride Susannah Rawlinson. It remained in the family until 1943 when it was transferred to the National Trust.

The barn opposite was originally part of Townend but is still used.

The height of commercialism......The Post Office / Shop / Newsagent and hot drinks dispenser all rolled up in one delightful package.

We walked down the lane to the church next where the churchyard was awash with daffodils

Jesus Church - Troutbeck

Near the church yet another well.

The old school house

Guess what was in the grounds?

And yet another acroos the road
