Visions of Cumbria

The purpose of this section is to show various pictures from Cumbria which do not normally appear on our walks pages. They may have been taken on a day out or maybe on the way to or back from one of our walks or sent in by one of our readers. Either way I hope that you will enjoy them.

The pictures shown here were sent in once again by Colin & Joan Ainsworth. They are from a 7.5 mile walk in the Rusland Valley in the south of Cumbria from Bouth to Rusland Church and back.

The walk started from thw White Hart at Bouth. The White Hart Inn dates back to the turn of the 17th Century (1600's)when the main Ireleth to Kendal turnpike ran through the village. The turnpike was the only good dry road north of the River Leven

The walk took them through the Hay Bridge nature reserve.

Rusland Hall. The hall was built in Georgian times and restored in 1845. It as been the home of the Archibald family since the early 19th Century.

On the way to Rusland Church which is seen behind. The church of St Paul, constructed in 1745 on an elevated site, was rebuilt in 1868, except for the west tower. The stained glass east window of the church displays Biblical scenes while boards on both sides give the ten commandments, the creed, and the Lords prayer. Author Arthur Ransome and his wife are buried in the churchyard.

The gravestone of the author Arthur Ransome and his wife. Ransome is best known for his "Swallows and Amazons" series of novels.

The return was via Oxen Park, Colton Church (seen here) and Old Hall Farm

The path back to Old Hall Farm and Bouth where Colin & Joan went to the White Hart Inn for Tea & Coffee.

Many thanks to Colin & Joan for these pictures.
