The purpose of this section is to show various pictures from Cumbria which do not normally appear on our walks pages. They may have been taken on a day out or maybe on the way to or back from one of our walks or sent in by one of our readers. Either way I hope that you will enjoy them.
Tuesday 9th Sepember 2008
Today had been pencilled in a "walk free" day so when we awoke to a rather murky day the decision was made to have a bit of a tour around the area. We started by visiting Keswick via the Whinlatter Pass and after a look around and a bite to eat made our way first to St. Bees Head and then to Whitehaven.
St Michael's Church at Lamplugh
The imposing stone archway at the entrance to Lamplugh Hall
Takem from the road over Whinlatter above High Lorton and looking down the Lorton Valley to Low Fell.
A brief stop at Scawgill Bridge but it was starting to drizzle by now.

And a pot of tea is the order of the day.
Back on our way to Keswick and a murky Bassenthwaite Lake from the roadside viewpoint.
Parked up at Keswick and a walk down to Friar's Crag
Catbells across Derwentwater from Friar's Crag
Walla Crag
The boathouse on Derwent Isle
Walking into town through Hope Park with the Headlands behind
An early lunch as we wait to see what the weather is going to do.
Looking a bit brighter so the decision is made for a trip to St Bees Head.
St Bees Head
And a visit to the cafe which also doubles up as a small shop for the caravan parks and Coast to Coasters.
After the cafe a short walk along the beach.
A shurt drive soon had us parked near the harbour at Whitehaven.

The lock gates
The Icing Station where the fishing boats can take on ice to keep the catch fresh
The north beach
This is where the fishing boats unload their catch using the yellow davits on the quayside.
The boat lifting facility at Whitehaven.
The gantry moves out over the dock on the two trackways and lifts/lowers the boats.
