Visions of Cumbria

The purpose of this section is to show various pictures from Cumbria which do not normally appear on our walks pages. They may have been taken on a day out or maybe on the way to or back from one of our walks or sent in by one of our readers. Either way I hope that you will enjoy them.

6th November 2008

Not now able to walk very far due to the Rheumatoid Arthritis we decided to have a little run out in the car. Although I have placed these pictures in the "Visions of Cumbria" section the first few pictures are taken in Yorkshire. The border between Cumbria and Yorkshire runs along the summit of Whernside before going over in turn Blea Moor and Great Knoutberry Hill before reaching Garsdale Head.

Twistleton Scar from the Ingleton to Hawes road.

A look up the valley

Ribblehead Viaduct.....More Info (new page)

Just visible are the tops of Park Fell, Simon Fell and Ingleborough

Whernside and Ribblehead from Sandy Hill

A short walk to the viaduct along what is part of the Yorkshire Dales 3 Peaks route.

Ingleborough through the arches.

Built originally between 1870 - 1875 and restored in three stages between 1988 - 1991 this cairn was built to commemorate the completion of the restoration work.

The six shanty towns that were set up around the area were over 2000 navvies lived and  where many died from disease and accidents.

Walking back to the car with the top of Pen y ghent just showing to the far right

From Ribblehead we decided to visit Dent passing the majestic Dent Head viaduct on the way. By the way, we are now in Cumbria! The area to the left of the picture is Langshaw Wold. The ridge in the centre is Aye Gill Pike and to the far right Baugh Fell.

Dent Head viaduct.

A short drive down the beautiful valley of Dentdale soon brought us to the village of Dent. Looking towards the Aye Gill Pike ridge.

St Andrew's Church at Dent

The Sun Inn supplied by the famous Dent Brewery

This fountain of pink granite commemorates the villages links with Adam Sedwick (1785 - 1873) who was professor of geology at Cambridge University and one of the greatest field geologists of his time.

A short walk down to the river.

Church Bridge and the River Dee. We are now on part of the route of the Dales Way.

Back to the village.....

.....and time for tea and a scone.

And finally a look towards Combe Scar on Middleton Fell
