Visions of Cumbria

The purpose of this section is to show various pictures from Cumbria which do not normally appear on our walks pages. They may have been taken on a day out or maybe on the way to or back from one of our walks or sent in by one of our readers. Either way I hope that you will enjoy them.

On Thursday the 7th of May 2009 with the promise of a fairly dry but windy day we decided to have a run out. The pictures on this webpage are from our outward leg which took us over Shap on the A6 to Askham and then to Pooley Bridge.

The valley of Longsleddale. The narrow road which ends at Sadgill is hidden by the trees. The valley was the inspiration for the setting of the childrens TV programme "Postman Pat"

The alternative Borrowdale. This used to be one of my favourite Bank Holiday walking spots. Sometimes you could walk the Whinfell Ridge and back up the valley without seeing a single person. Sorry about the quality of the picture but it was partly into the sun.

Ashtead Fell which is the start of the Whinfell Ridge, a fine walk between the A6 and M6

On the other side of the A6 High House Bank.

Looking north along the A6. It's always an hard decision for me when driving north. Should it be the M6 with the delightful Lune Gorge or over the A6 and the barren Shap Fells.

We are now at Shap summit on the A6 which is about 1380feet above sea level. The valley seen here is that of Crookdale.

At the summit stands this memorial....

As I was taking these pictures we had a bit of a shower but it wasn't very heavy. It was however very difficult to stand still in the windy conditions.

Just before reaching Shap village I pulled in to get this picture which shows the minor road down to Wet Sleddale reservoir.

Taken from near Hackthorpe. Looking over the M6 to the North Peninnes.

Lowther Castle

The plan had been to have a cuppa at the cafe in Askham but the Askham Stores/Cafe was closed. Not sure why, maybe new ownership because the fridges/freezers were empty but the shelves were stacked.

After a short walk around the village I decided to move on to Pooley Bridge.

On the way to Pooley Bridge we got this view of Blencathra.

Nearly into Pooley Bridge I stopped for this view of Arthurs Pike.

We parked up at Pooley Bridge in the car park near the bridge over the River Eamont.

Looking down the River Eamont

Looking up to Ullswater

We had a short walk down to the waterside. To our right is Dunmallet Hill (or Dunmallard Hiil depending on your preference with Salmond's Plantation to the left.

I love these little stone buildings.

Looking over to the landing stage for the Ullswater Steamers.

Looking down Ullswater.

It was quite choppy on the water.

Pooley Bridge. It was here that we stopped for lunch.
