The purpose of this section is to show various pictures from Cumbria which do not normally appear on our walks pages. They may have been taken on a day out or maybe on the way to or back from one of our walks or sent in by one of our readers. Either way I hope that you will enjoy them.
3rd December 2009
With the weatherman promising a brighter afternoon we delayed a visit to Lakeland (Plastics) of Windermere until lunchtime. Edith was looking for a present for her brother but unfortunately they did not have what she wanted. This cheered me up no end as the price tags in there made me dizzy and it also gave us time to visit the waterfront at Bowness to see how things were after the floods. After the walk we had a look in the main shopping centre and we did find what we came for.
The floods have caused a lot of damage to the shops along the waterfront but I was delighted to see that things are slowly but surely returning to normal and there is no reason to stay away. Most of the main shopping area was well above the flood level and are trading as normal. Most of them on the waterfront are also open and the boats are running to there Winter timetable
Cumbria is open and needs your business.
No sign of any brightness yet. Looking up Windermere to the Fairfield Horseshoe.
Again in close up.
The water level is still a little on the high side but nothing untoward.
Plenty of work to do at the amusement arcade although the resturant above was open. The snack bar as been stripped out and it looked like it was being rewired.
The Information Office which recently had a refit as been stripped out with work in progress.
There is quite a bit of work going on at the main jetty and cafe but otherwise things are ok.
The level is still high but the spirit of Cumbria like the light on the jetty burns bright.
Walking back on our way to Cockshott Point. The Pitlochry Store in the complex was open as usual.
OPEN!!!!
We are now at Cockshott Point. The tidemark of the flood level can be seen clearly here. My best guesstimate was that it was around 10 feet higher than the present high level.
Looking down Windermere.
Looking up Windermere from Cockshott Point.
Kentmere Fells in close up.
Not sure what the position is at the Marina but there's plenty of activity.
The little boat was constantly back and forward to Belle Isle.
Walking towards the Ferry station
On our way back to town and I am stood on the high water level of the flood looking down to the lake.
Back into Bowness and a visit to the cafe on the right which was above flood level
A final look at the Fairfield Horseshoe now with a little more light on it
