Visions of Cumbria

The purpose of this section is to show various pictures from Cumbria which do not normally appear on our walks pages. They may have been taken on a day out or maybe on the way to or back from one of our walks or sent in by one of our readers. Either way I hope that you will enjoy them.

8th December 2009

I hadn't intended going out today. The pain in my calf which started near the of Sundays walk was still there although not as bad. However when I heard that a whale had been washed up at Arnside my nosy side came out and I decided to go have a look. Although I only walked about 2 miles by the end my calf was very sore again but not the sharp intense pain of Sunday.

I parked the car near the viaduct.

A truly magnificent structure.

As I walked along the promenade I was surprised that there wasn't more people about given that the news about the whale had been on the local radio and Radio Cumbria. I asked a couple of the locals if they knew whereabouts it was and was met with puzzled looks.

It was then that I noticed something on the other side of the estuary near Meathop. I still couldn't be sure although it was the right colour.

I decided to have a short walk down the estuary.

Pictures were difficult. This side was in the shade of Arnside Knott whilst the other side was in bright sunshine.

Zooming in on Whitbarrow over the aqueduct.

I met a couple from the NE who lent me their binoculars and it was plain to see that it was indeed the whale. I don't have a tripod but finding a stick and with a bit of balancing I managed a couple of shots at 18xZoom

Roughly at GR SD443790

In all the years I have been walking here I have never seen two trains on the viaduct.

I carried on along the foreshore to the white house

From here I walked up into the top of the village to visit the churches.

St James church at Arnside which was built in 1866

Back to the car.

The pictures below are courtesy of our local paper. The whale was first spotted at Hest Bank last Friday. The poor creature is around 40 feet long according to reports and was identified from the photographs by a spokesperson for the Zoological Society of London as a Fin Whale. I am not sure at this time how it will be removed.
