The purpose of this section is to show various pictures from Cumbria which do not normally appear on our walks pages. They may have been taken on a day out or maybe on the way to or back from one of our walks or sent in by one of our readers. Either way I hope that you will enjoy them.
27th February 2011
Edith was feeling a bit better today but not up to anything much. However she did fancy a bit of a walk and look around so we decided on Kirkby Lonsdale. We left the car near to Devil's Bridge and took the riverside path to the Radical Steps and then up to Ruskin's View.
Kirkby Lonsdale is a popular spot with the biking fraternity.
A look upriver from Devils Bridge
And downstream
Devil's Bridge
We took the path alongside the river with the playing fields on our left.
The path stays close to the river as it starts to turn to the left....
....to approach Mill Ayre. The path as been washed away in places and when wet can be a bit muddy and slippy.
Mill Ayre. From here you can walk up into the town or.....
.....as we did, carry on along the riverside to.....
.....the Radical Steps. Built in 1819 there are 86 of them. Supposedly named after the liberal views of a Dr Pearson who had them built. It used to be up in one go but nowadays I have to have a stop on the way up!
However the effort is well worth it as we reach the top and walk the short distance to Ruskin's View. J.M.W Turner painted the River Lune from here which inspired John Ruskin, a lover of Turner's work so much that he wrote " I do not know in all my own country, still less in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine".
Well I'm not sure that I'd go along with what Ruskin wrote nut it is a lovely spot and a fine view.
The Georgian Folly as we enter the churchyard.
St Mary's Church, Kirkby Lonsdale.
The Market Square....market day is Thursday.
Walking back to the car.
A stop at Hornby on the way home.
