Route:    Wythop Mill - Church - Sale Fell - Kelswick Farm - Wythop Mill

We arrived at Sty Cottage around noon and decided to walk up Sale Fell before unpacking. Our route took us along the quiet lane towards the Pheasant Inn. Once past the church we look a rising path along the flank of Sale Fell. From this path at gate into Wythop Wood we headed up to the summit of Sale Fell. Our descent was made westward to pick up a path down to Kelswick Farm from where we returned to the cottage along a quiet lane.

Sty Cottage at Wythop Mill. For further information please take a look at the website. The cottage is suitable for 2 people and is situated in a delightful location with plenty of wildlife including Red Squirrels, Roe Deer and the Bassenthwaite Ospreys. The cottage was originally a pig sty within an old working timber mill which primarily supplied fences to the Earl of Lonsdale's Estate. The owners, John and Maggie regularly stay at the cottage themselves and we thought it was absolutely wonderful. By the way, if you are a member of the Wainwright Society you may qualify for a discount!

Walking up the quiet lane towards the Pheasant Inn this view of Binsey through the hedging.

Just before reaching the Church there is the Sunday School built in 1887

St. Margaret's Church , Wythop consecrated by the Bishop of Carlisle in 1866 and replaces the old church which is now in ruins in Chapel Wood.

From near the Church, Binsey and Bassenthwaite Lake.

The white cross on the rocks (Wainwright: Sale Fell 9) now badly faded

As we climbed up the track the Uldale Fells came into view. The white building on the lower left is the Pheasant Inn.

A dark & broody Skiddaw with Wythop Woods on the left. We have left the path at this point and are climbing up to the summit.

Looking down on Wythop Woods and Bass lake

Getting higher and Dodd appears alongside Skiddaw

Looking across the Solway Firth the Scottish Hills were clearer than this picture shows

Binsey..... I've knocked Binsey in the past but viewed from here I could get to like it.

Near the summit now and looking over Wythop Woods towards the Uldale Fells

Skiddaw, the Ullock Pike ridge and Dodd from near the summit

Looking down into the Wythop valley with Lords Seat in the distance

further right to Broom Fell , Widow hause and Graystones

and across to Ling Fell which will be our next walk.
