Area: | Lake District | Ascent: | 1705 feet |
Walk No: | 83 | Time: | 5 hours 30 mins |
Date: | 7th October 2007 | Parking: | Ashes Lane, just north of the Plumgarth roundabout near Kendal (SD488961) |
Distance: | 12.00 miles | Weather: | Fine but misty |
Route: | The outward route was a mixture of farm lanes, field paths and the Dales Way. The return was similar whilst trying not to use the same paths. |
When the late AW wrote his book "The Outlying Fells of Lakeland" he walked to School Knott from Windermere, thats the town of Windermere not the water. Being no great lover of the town with its shops and also wanting to do a longer route we did this walk from Ashes Lane and utilising a section of the Dales Way. It wasn't a great day for photography. The start of the walk was misty and even on School Knott summit the views were very limited.
We left the car at Ashes Lane which is to the left of the A591 about 1 mile north of the Plumgarth roundabout ouside Kendal.
As we walked up Ashes Lane I took this picture looking across the A591 (which can't be seen), towards Potter Fell.
Again looking towards Potter Fell and still misty.
As I took the previous picture Edith noticed this hot air balloon to the south. Pity it was so hazy/misty
Approaching Ashes.
I assume that in times past this would just be a farmhouse. Now it seemed to be a mixture of private housing.
We have just reached the point where we joined on to the Dales Way here and looking to New Hall.
For a short while our path followed this tarmacced lane. We never saw any traffic though.
The weather did seem to brighten for a while but the sun didn't seem strong enough to burn off the misty haze
Looking across to "The Glen"
Fell Plain farmhouse on the route of the Dales Way
Soon after Fell Plain our path left the tarmac lane.
and headed across open land
Approaching Crag House farm
There is no problem whatsover with route finding. The Dales Way is a very popular LDW although we hadn't seen anybody yet!
Approaching Outrun Nook where we would be back on tarmac but only for 200 yards
Outrun Nook. It was so quiet as we passed by. However when we returned here about 90 minutes later on our way back we would meet 40 maybe 50 people who seemed to be on a charity walk.
Back on grass again and a little brightness in the sky
Getting near now. Looking across to School Knott plantation with the slopes of Grandsire to the right
School Knott tarn. We had left the Dales Way to come here and to ascend School Knott
On the short climb up School Knott and looking back across the tarn to Grandsire
School Knott summit looking to Claife Heights. We surprisingly, especially for a Sunday had the summit to ourselves as the couple below were on there way down.
A close up of the yachts on Windermere
Edith on School Knott. Look carefully to the right of her and you can just see Pike O'Stickle and Harrison Stickle
Dave on School Knott
Hazy views to Orrest Head and Wansfell
As a group make there way up from Windermere it's time to take our leave.
Reflections in School Knott tarn. We made our way back to the Dales Way from here.
Back on the Dales Way
The last cut of 2007
Autumn colours on the way back
Returning to Outrun Nook
Looking back to Crag House farm
Another view across to The Glen
Not named on my map but it looked nice
Back to Ashes
Looking across to the Stavely Fells
Ashes Lane campsite
and finally back through the Ratherheath plantation to the car.
