Date: | 4th November 2007 | Parking: | Malham Tarn |
Distance: | 9.25 miles | Weather: | Fine and mainly sunny |
Route: | Malham Tarn - Mastiles Lane - Smearbottoms Lane - Gordale Scar - Janet's Foss - Malham - Malham Cove - Malham Tarn |
It is not very often when out walking that your start point and car park is virtually the highest point of the walk but today was one such walk. We left the car at Malham Tarn which at an altitude of 1230 feet was only about 70 feet lower than the highest point of the walk. When we arrived at the car park near the Tarn I was surprised to find it empty and remarked that before long we would be seeing plenty of people. As it turned out we only saw a couple of mountain bikers until we reached Gordale Scar where we met the crowds.
Janet's Foss
Following the path down alongside the beck
Looking back to the Foss
Out of woods now and into Mantley Field with a path of old flagstones
Approaching Malham and ready for our butties
An empty seat!......Run and get it Edith while I take some pictures
There were cars parked all along the road. Malham is very popular, get there early.
Parking on the roadside is free but donations are always welcome to help maintain the village
OK to go in here if the walks finished but we have a bit to do yet!
Walking up the road towards Malham Cove
The "terraced" fields are in mid picture
Malham Cove
It must have looked impressive when it was a waterfall
A close up of a climber on the crags
and some more at the other side
Climbing the stepped path up the cove side
Lots of people about now, all enjoying a beautiful November day
At the top of the cove showing a section of limestone pavement
Walking up what as become known as the "dry valley"
Nearing the top of the dry valley
At the head of the dry valley. This would once have been a waterfall.
Climbing the stepped path out of the dry valley
Looking back down the dry valley. But what happened to the water that used to flow down here.
The answer is here. The outfall from Malham Tarn now disappears down a series of "Water sinks" to re-emerge at the base of Malham Cove
Correction: Information supplied by J.Hoye. It was thought for many years that the above was the case. However after carrying out dye tests this was found not to be so for further information click HERE. It will open in a new page.
And finally, back to the car.
