It had been our intention today to meet up on Beacon Fell with Dik Stoddart who runs the informative website to the Cumbria Way. However in the event the "meet up" did not materialise because (a) we were there too early and (b) Dik and his companions were a bit later than estimated. I did contact Dik to arrange a second meet at Stable Harvey but that never happened either due to the weather.

I had over estimated how long it would take us to drive to Brown Howe so when we arrived we had time to walk down to a rather dark looking Coniston Water.

Looking across Coniston to Selside

Plenty of roadside parking at Brown Howe or use the Car Park opposite £6 for the day.

Walking up the lane towards Stable Harvey.

This is where we left the lane .....turn left just before the power lines. If you feel the need you can drive up to this point but the walk along the lane is too pleasant to miss.

Dark clouds over the Coniston Fells as we gain height.

A look back to Stable Harvey as Coniston Water comes into view

And again from higher......Looks brighter to the north.

Broody Conistons

Approaching Wainwrights "rocky gully"

Looking back from the top of the gully. You can just see the old reservoir that we would visit later under the Coniston Fells

Black Combe from Beacon Fell

The summit cairn. Now we had intended to be here at 12:45 but it was only 12:10 so we decided to walk down to Bleak Knott.

The weather didn't look at all promisiing at this point but was still fine.

The heather is looking gorgeous at the moment.

Beacon Tarn with Wool Knott behind as we walk down to Bleak Knott

Looking over Yew Bank towards the Dunnerdale Fells

After waiting at Bleak Knott for a short while and having a look through the binoculars we decided to return over Beacon Fell and go to the old reservoir and hopefully meet up with Dik as we returned.

Descending to Stable Harvey

A look back to beacon Fell from near Stable Harvey. From here we walked to the Old reservoir

As we got to the reservoir ot started to rain, not too bad at first but then the heavens opened. It only lasted 10 -15 minutes but that was long enough.

Back at Stable Harvey and it had temporarily stopped. Still no sign of Dik and with further rain looking immenent we walked back to Brown Howe and the car.

Next Walk:      20th July 2008 -- Catrigg Force & Victoria Cave from Settle

Last Walk:      15th July 2008 -- Glasson & The Lancashire Coastal Way
