This was the first day of our holiday at Wha House farms cottage. On the way there we had done a short walk to Green Crag from the Birker Fell road. Whilst Edith was doing the unpacking I made the most of the glorious weather to take a short walk to the old Roman fort.

Looking towards Hard Knott pass from outside the cottage.

Wha House farm. The cottage is on the end of the barn. Compact but cosy for two people.

As I walked along the road towards Hard Knott I got this view of Harter Fell which along with Hard Knott fell we would be going up the following day.

Looking towards Border End and the Hard Knott pass. The Roman fort lies on a plateau about half-way up the fellside

Looking up to the head of Eskdale with the magnificent Bowfell as a centrepiece

The phonebox and warning signs at the bottom of the pass at Brotherilkeld

I've arrived at the fort now and looking towards the top of the pass.

The Bath House which lies outside the walls of the fort. Fancy walking to here in the middle of winter!

The main entrance to the fort.

It's a magnificent setting on a warm summers day but what would the legions of Rome have made of it in winter

The North Western gate overlooks Eskdale with these splendid views to the Scafells

Looking down Eskdale from the fort

Looking down to the main gate and Harter Fell

After a good look around it was time to leave ......through the main gate of course!

Time to stop on the way back to see the lovely Jubilee Bridge over Hardknott Gill.
