11th August 2012

A beautiful morning took us to Silverdale for this my favourite walk. I wasn't too sure that I would be able to make it up the Knott but there are a number of opportunities along the way to cut it short. Anyway it's far too good a walk to rush.

We were parked up in Silverdale near the church and walking for 8:30.

There was still a touch of morning mist over the bay at Grange and Hampsfell...

...but it was clearing away and the views over the old fishermens cottages to Humphrey Head and beyond were good.

Looking the other way down the bay towards the power stations at Heysham.

After crossing the fields we made our way down to the shore at The Cove.

Views to Morecambe and Heysham...

...and over to Grange.

A short walk up the lane from The Cove and along the Silverdale - Arnside road soon had to Holgates Caravan park.

The reception/cafe/shop/swimming pool/etc which we would visit later.

Looking over to Humphrey Head as we made our way to Far Arnside.

Arnside Knott.

It's follow my leader time across the field paths.

Hollins Farm.

Passing by Hollins Farm to access Heathwaite.

Such a wonderful place in springtime.

" Sharing "

As we left Heathwaite we saw this recently placed seat. It seemed a shame not to take advantage of some kind persons generosity and rest for a few moments.

From the seat it was only a short walk and climb to the two bench seats with glorious views over to Grange...

...and down the bay to home.

After a further rest another short walk and climb took us to the viewpoint.

Looking over the woods to Humphrey Head with the Furness peninsula beyond.

Over New Barns to Grange and Hampsfell.

The Coniston fells just visible through the haze over Lindale.

Likewise the Eastern and Far Eastern Fells over Whitbarrow.

From the viewpoint we made our way to above the scree slopes...

....where the views were a bit spoilt by the direct sun.

Arnside Tower & farm which we will pass by later.

The summit trig point.

Big bird!

A seat with a view.

From the summit we made our way to the top of Redhills my favourite spot.

The distant views were a little hazy today but I have so many memories of clear Lakeland views, Lakeland under snow and even a few cloud inversions.

A "tour" train crosses the viaduct on its way to Ravenglass. Sadly they have withdrawn the steam engines from this run.

I would like to linger longer as this may sadly be my last visit but we have to get back and I have one last thing to look for.

We had spoken to a guy on the top who had come up this way and he had seen a few Scotch Argus flutterbies so we decided to have a look around.

Nope!

Nope!

Nope...

errr....Nope!

Just one chance at a shot and not the best there is but that's the chappie.

The final descent through the woods to the Arnside - Silverdale road....

...where a short walk took us through the farmyard of Arnside Tower farm...

...and up to Arnside Tower for another short rest.

Arnside Tower.

From the tower we took a path along the lane at the perimeter of Holgates which eventually led into the caravan park where we had a cuppa and cake in the cafe...

...before making our way back to Silverdale via Elmslack.

And finally....St John's Church, Silverdale where we were parked nearby.
