The morning was taken up with shopping and a visit to the Stone Jetty cafe, but in the early afternoon we took a little walk down to Half Moon Bay and across the Barrows returning through the village. It was a dull day which the pictures reflect.
Taken from "Smithy Hill" looking down to the harbour. There were three ships waiting at anchor.
As we got to Half Moon Bay we were surprised to see that Dandelions were still seeding
Looking along Half Moon Bay towards the Barrows. The tide had been in earlier and was now ebbing.
Entering the Barrows. The wall marks the boundary of the old Heysham Head site and used to be twice as tall. Heysham Head was a popular visitor attraction in the 50's and early 60's. In the summer time it would be packed with visitors. Sadly the start of the foreign holiday led to it's eventual decline and the site is now private housing. The bottom section which we are about to enter was an international Go-Kart track for a while before being abandoned. Now it is owned by the National Trust. For more on the history of Heysham click HERE. It will open in a new page
This is where the old Go-Kart track used to be. Now owned by the National Trust and being allowed to revert back to nature
We are now approaching the other end of the old track and going onto the Barrows. The beach on the left was at one time an official nudist beach but didn't last too long.
St. Patrick's Chapel from one of the many paths across the Barrows. An history of this can be found on the website previously shown
The stone graves
St. Peter's Church.....once again the history is on that website
It was only about 2pm and the flash was wanting to operate on the camera
Into the village Main Street now and the local watering hole.....The Royal Hotel
The village square complete with Red Hot Pokers in November
And finally....those of us of an age to remember Heysham Head this was the way in. It is now a private house. You can still see the arch of the entrance which as now been glazed in.
