4th September 2008

We awoke this morning to the sound of rainfall. Plans for a visit to the South Lakes were quickly shelved, I'm afraid my days of setting off in the rain are now few and far between. When I was working it was a different ball-game, any day free from work meant a day on the fells whatever the weather but that's in the past. It finally stopped raining around 2pm and we actually saw that thing called the sun for a while. Having some shopping to do in town we left the car on the promenade and walked to the shopping centre. Here are a few pictures taken along the way.

We left the car on the promenade near the West End beach and walked into town

The recently renovated Midland Hotel. I think I preferred it without the new top storey. It doesn't look too bad from this side but from the landward side it looks like a big shed on the roof.

However Urban Splash and there contractors have done a splendid job.

The Stone Jetty. We didn't go on it today as the cafe hadn't opened this morning with the weather.

Not looking too bright over the Lakeland fells

The boat in the foreground is made of fibreglass and the mould was a casting from the old Morecambe Fishermans lifeboat " The William Priestley"

This fellow must be one of the most photographed chappies in the NW of England

The RNLI station which houses the Inshore Rescue boat. A new station is to be built shortly near the Stone Jetty which will also house the Hovercraft. It was around this point that a heavy shower passed over so it was a dash into the shopping centre to do our jobs.

It had brightened up when we came out of the shopping centre and we were just in time to catch the tail end of this rainbow.

It was around this point that we were stopped by a lady walking along the promenade whos asked if we were Dave & Edith. the lady turned out to be Anne Maguire from Caton who sent me information & pictures a while ago regarding the "Fishstones" at Caton.

My favourite view of the Midland Hotel.....makes it almost tropical....I did say ALMOST!!!!

A cloud covered Black Combe to the left of the Stone Jetty

And finally......The "Polo" Tower. This is all that remains of Morecambes fairground and it is really a bit of an eyesore. It is now owned by Morrisons the supermarket people who bought the site for redevelopment. It can't be taken down because there is an ongoing contract with some mobile phone operators for the arials on top. However the local council have recently issued an enforcement notice to Morrisons for the tower to be cleaned up hence the scaffolding.
