2nd May 2009

We were not able to go far today as it was our eldest granddaughters 10th birthday and we were at the party in the afternoon. Also it was a Bank Holiday weekend. We decided to have a short drive first to Overton and then to Sunderland Point.

Our first stop was at St Helen's Church at Overton where Edith wanted to put some flowers on her parents grave. It was at this church just over 40 years ago that we were married.

Looking over the River Lune to Glasson Dock from the Garden of Remembrance

A rather badly damaged Mermaids Purse. Actually they are the egg cases of Skate or Rays.

We left the car on the shingle near the First Terrace

A look back towards Overton. The road from Overton is tidal so please check the tide times if you intend visiting.

Walking along First Terrace

We are now at the end of the First Terrace looking towards the Second Terrace. 4 wheeled transport goes along the shore from here unless of course the tide is in then it's a case of leaving it here and using the raised footpath.

We were not going to the Second Terrace however. Our route was down The Lane to the West Shore.

At the West Shore. Now we were nearly at our destination.

Barely 100 yards in a S'ly direction brings you to Sambo's Grave.

This lonely grave in a corner of the field as been tended for generations by young children. I can remember being brought her when I was around 7 years old. For more information click HERE (opens in new page)

In the opposite corner to the grave was this unusual group of stones all balanced on canes.

They all carried the childs personal inscription.

And this is where they had come from. It's roughly a round trip of 150 miles.

Walking back to The Lane with Heysham 2 Power Station ahead.

Nearly back to the car.
