11th December 2010
It had been 4 weeks since I last moved out of the house. It had started with a simple head cold which seemed to take ages for me to shake off probably to the weekly injection I have for my Rheumatoid Arthritis which reduces my immune system and therefore the body's ability to fight these bugs. No sooner had that cleared than I started with severe earache which spread quickly down the left hand side of my face. Even my top teeth which are no longer there seemed to be aching and as it was a weekend this meant a visit to the out of hours emergency doctor. The problem was diagnosed as an outer ear infection and I was given some anti-biotics and an ear-spray and told to see my GP in about a week. My GP checked it out a week later and said it was clearing but wanted me to see her the following week and in the meantime to keep out of the very cold weather which was enveloping the country by then. I returned the following week to find it had flared up again and was given ear drops which, at the date above I am still on. By now with the weather thawing I was going stir crazy so decided on this short walk along the canal on which we were accompanied by our daughter and granddaughter.
We left the car near the canal at Hest Bank, a popular spot for feeding the local duck population. From left to right, our daughter Melanie, Edith, granddaughter Sophie and last, but not least, Jazz a rescue dog who despite a bad start to her life is a wonderful natured dog.....watch out for that bread though Sophie, she's got her eye on it.
Let the feeding begin!....We soon had to move from here though as the ducks were slipping and sliding all over the place.
I think Jazz was wondering what the ducks were like to play with.....
....she was taking some holding back at this point.
I left the girls to head northwards along the canal to see how my breathing was after 4 weeks of inactivity. I seemed to be huffing and puffing more than usual even on this flat path. Hopefully things will improve if I can get out a little more.
Any traces of the snow we have had are long gone although the canal is still partly frozen.
This pair of swans were making there way along the canal.....not at all there usual elegant selves.
I had been looking at the Lake District webcams earlier and was surprised at how quickly the snow had thawed. As we drove along the promenade there didn't seem much on the Conistons.
A big close up confirmed this.
Another view across the bay towards Black Combe.
Approaching the swing bridge
Warton Crag from just past the swing bridge. It was around this point that I turned around to meet up with the others.
Sophie in deep conversation with Nan who looks puzzled by whatever it is.
But something as amused her here.
Sophie, Melanie and Jazz.
One girl and her dog.
Desert Island Ducks.
Having reached our starting point we decided to follow the canal southwards.
Some of the boats along this stretch of the canal are lived in. However there only seemed to be one occupied at present, possibly due to the very cold weather we have just had.
Heading back.
Looking at the fish in the canal.
And finally.
