17th January 2011

We were hoping to go to the Lakes today but plans were thrown awry when a refrigerated delivery of my arthritis medication didn't arrive at it's usual time of 8am. A phone call to the sender was made and we were told that it should be with us between 9am and 11am. I wasn't too bothered however as a look out of the window confirmed it was a dull, dour morning. Leaving Edith at home I drove down to Half Moon Bay near Heysham Harbour for this short walk and to see what the weather was like across the bay.

This work seems to have been going on forever. It is where the cable from the latest wind-farm in Morecambe Bay will come ashore.

It is a really grey day although to the WSW there is some brightness

My short walk will take me across the fields to the old Heysham Head site then across the Heysham Barrows to St Patrick's Church

Look carefully and you will see an avenue of red marker bouys. This is where the cable will come ashore. A cable laying ship was supposed to come here before Christmas but the work was postponed due to the cold weather. I couldn't find anybody to talk to at the site to see what the schedule was now.

A look back to Heysham Harbour and the Power Stations.

Entering the old Heysham Head site now owned by the National Trust.

The path across the old head. This area was once an International Go-Kart track.

There's a ship leaving the harbour....

...bound for Belfast.

The beach area below me here was once a designated nudist beach. It didn't last very long, I think the climate may have had something to do with it.

A look back as I leave the old Heysham Head site to enter Heysham Barrows also owned by the National Trust.

Walking down towards Throbshaw Point.

The incoming tide as driven the birdlife up the beach.

A short climb now up to St Patrick's Chapel

There's not a lot to see across the bay although the day did brighten later when we went to Arnside for a walk.

The Stone Graves and the old Chapel

From the Chapel my route back would follow an higher path ...

...before meeting up with my outward track.

Almost back

The car park at Half Moon Bay.
