24th January 2011

Around 1:30pm the day brightened to give a little sunshine. We had to go into Morecambe and decided to park up near Broadway and walk in and I managed to get a few pictures along the way. If you don't like boats and water it's probably best to look away now.

Although fine & sunny the views across the bay aren't that good today.

The boats moored in this area behind one of the new groynes are owned mainly for pleasure....

....there are only what I consider two full-time fishermen at Morecambe now....

....a decline that is repeated all around the UK.

Looking towards the Stone Jetty from the yacht club slipway. This is where the fleet of fishing boats were moored when I was a kid. Time fades the memory but I would guestimate that in the mid to late 1950's when I started going out with them there would be around 25 - 30 boats. By the I started fishing after leaving the Merchant Navy in the mid 1960's that had dropped to around 15 or so.

This area at the top of Green Street was always known as the fishermans slipway. It as changed now with the new promenade, there used to be an old shelter here where the banter had to be heard to be believed.

Situated at around where the forecourt of the old Central Pier stood is this hideous pile of metal. It is supposed to be a profile of the Lakeland Fells but bears very little resemblance to them and hides the real thing!!

Looking back to the yacht club slipway.

The sand still invades the promenade on windy days. We never had this problem when the beach was stones and mud....lol

A Morecambe shrimp trawl net, minus the net. Little as changed over the years apart from the materials. The beam and bobbins used to be wood, nowadays it is metal and hard rubber.

The building on stilts is the race office for the yacht club.

Back.....that's all folks!!
