The talk on the news the previous night and on the weather programmes was that the tail-end of Hurricane Katia was due to pay us a visit today. As this was a period of fairly high tides I thought it might be worth having a walk from home into Morecambe to see how the sea defences stood up. In the event it was a bit of a non-starter as with the wind fairly well back in the SSW to SW it didn't make it that rough. However it was very windy and if it had been from the W to NW it would have been a different story.
I arrived at Half Moon Bay about 30 minutes before high water. It was fairly choppy but with the wind back it wasn't much to weite home about.
A look towards the harbour showed the Isle of Man ferry was in port which meant that the overnight sailing had been cancelled.
I hope they didn't get sand in their eyes, it was being blown about.
Looking along the old Heysham Head site. Usually there are plenty of dog walkers along here but I guess they have picked a more sheltered spot today.
A spot of blue in an otherwise grey sky. Fortunately the walk stayed dry for me apart for some spray further along.
Looking to Throbshaw Point. It was quite difficult to stand still now so my normally lop-sided horizons have been corrected by the wind ;-)
Looking towards Morecambe as I approach St Patrick's Chapel. Even up here I was having problems with spray.
The Stone Graves.
St Patrick's Chapel.
St Peter's Church.
There's normally a nice view across the bay from this part of the graveyard which as been purposely left uncut.
After walking through Heysham Village the decision was top or bottom path. Not really an hard one to make today. The next section of the walk was spent on avoiding the spray....
The new breakwater built as part of the sea defences and used by the anglers was putting on a bit of a show.
Looking towards the Stone Jetty and the Midland Hotel from the Battery.
The Jetty from West End beach....
.....and nearer with wet feet!
Just time for this one by the Midland Hotel before Edith picked me up....
....and called me a silly old b*gger but still took me back to Half Moon Bay for a cuppa....
....and a last view along the shore.
