15th December 2011

In the afternoon following my morning visit to Sunderland Point we had to pop down into Morecambe for some shopping. With the day brightening a little it was an opportunity to take the camera and get a few pictures of a short walk along the promenade.

We left the car near the Battery to walk into town. There was a fair bit of cloud over the bay but as we approached the Stone Jetty we got a few views of Grange and Hampsfell across the bay and the snow covered Red Screes and Caudale Moor over the jetty.

The Midland Hotel, the running of which as been taken over by English Lakes Hotels.

With time to spare we decided to have a walk along the jetty.

Looking towards home from the end of the jetty....

....and across the bay.

Looking towards an hidden Ingleborough.

Looking back along the jetty with the Midland Hotel in the distance.

After leaving the jetty we made our way towards the town centre.

The "new" Central Beach is certainly an improvement on how it used to be before the groynes and imported sand but there are drawbacks.

Our Eric. I always think he'd be happier facing the other way.

As we approach the Clock Tower the sand after recent storms as invaded the promenade.

There have been various initiatives taken to try to stop the sand encroaching onto the promenade, gardens and road none of which  have been really successful. This section of promenade as been cleared but it can still be seen how deep it was.

Even the monstrosity that is supposed to show the Lakeland fells now as its own sandy beach and tarn.

We walked as far as the slipway at Green Street. When I was a youngster the area in front of me was filled with shrimp boats.

A look towards the Lord Street slipway before we go into town to do our shopping.

The Midland Hotel as we return to the car.
