When the late Alfred Wainwright started to write the Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells he split the area up into seven areas using his own system to mark the boundaries of each. In each of these areas he listed between 27 and 36 individual fells. For each fell he then did a number of routes to the summit. The whole project was completed in the period 1952 - 1966. AW was so meticulous that he set himself a timetable to complete the project in. When he finished the last summit of Starling Dodd on the 10th September 1965 he was just one week ahead of his schedule. Those of you that have read the guides will understand my admiration for the man. Those of you who haven't read them, please try, you'll usually find them at your library.
