Route:  Lancaster - Crook O' Lune - Lancaster

The path follows the track of an old railway line alongside the River Lune. There are riverside paths and I used some of them today but some parts were very muddy and slippy, not the sort of thing for trainers.

The weir at Halton. The river up to this point is tidal.

The Lune Aqueduct. It is 660 feet long and carries the Lancaster Canal over the River Lune.

Designed by John Rennie it was started in 1794 and completed in 1797 at a cost of £48,320.18s.10d.....bah!! to decimalisation

A short distance up river is the bridge carrying the M6 over the river. Probably took longer and certainly cost more.

Looking back through the motorway bridge

Some rather expensive looking property on the other side of the river

The path along this section was quite good to walk on apart from wetting my trainers through

A sign of times gone by. A boathouse.

One of the old railway stations, now a boathouse for the Lancaster University rowing club

Another weir near the boathouse

The riverside path. This was one of the decent sections. Every so often I had to divert to the tarmac path which is only a few yards to the right.

Another weir near where water is extracted from the Lune. Not syre if it's still there or not, but there used to be a salmon counter here which counted the salmon as they jumped the weir.

Back on the tarmac section getting near to the Crook O'Lune

Looking downriver from where the railway bridge crosses the Lune

And also upriver. The Crook O'Lune is just round the bend

The Crook O'Lune road bridge from the rail Bridge

The road bridge from the picnic area. This is a very popular spot in summer but it as hidden dangers in the water. Quite a number of people have drowned here over the years the last being only a few weeks ago.

Looking up the Lune valley from the Crook O'Lune car park. Ingleborough should be centre picture if it was clear

By now the light drizzle was getting heavier so most of the time was spent on the tarmac path.

Just had to include this. When the pathway was completed as a Millenium project it was decided to put various pieces of "artwork" at selected sites. At this point 9 trees were replanted upside down. Well, they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but not in this guys eye!!!!
