Area: Lake District Ascent: 2288 feet
Walk No: 49 Time: 4 hours 15 minutes
Date: 27th July 2007 Parking: Cow Bridge near Brotherswater
Distance: 7.0 miles Weather: Cloudy with odd shower at first then persistent heavy rain. Medium to Fresh breeze

Route:    Hartsop - Hayeswater - Gray Crag - Thornthwaite Crag - Threshthwaite Mouth - Threshthwaite Cove - Pasture Beck - Hartsop

Edith was back in attendance today and as we were driving to the Lakes the weatherman on Radio Cumbria was promising us a mixture of sunshine and showers with the showers passing by quickly in a medium to fresh breeze. We parked up at Cow Bridge and as we walked up to the Hayeswater reservoir that seemed to be the case. The day changed for the worse as we approached Thornthwaite Crag. We stopped there for a little break and the rain came down like stairrods. There were a few breaks on the the way down to Threshthwaite Mouth but from there the rain just got heavier and more persistent. Therefore there is no photographic record of the latter part of the walk.

Waterfalls on the way to Hayeswater

Looking back towards St. Sunday Crag

Hayeswater reservoir

From the reservoir we just headed up the slope of Gray Crag to the ridge. Part way up we had to put the waterproofs on. Looking across to The Knott

From the same spot looking to Brock Crags, Angletarn Pikes and Place Fell

and across towards Patterdale with showers passing over

Dave on Gray Crag....The wind from this point onwards was quite strong.

Initially I had thought of walking round to Kidsty Pike, High Raise, Rampsgill Head and The Knott but as this was Ediths first walk after her cold I had discarded the idea. It's just as well the way the weather turned. These "Wainwright walks" are for our photographic memories and later any chance of photography went out of the window.

Rest Dodd from Gray Crag with the High Street ridge behind

Looking to Place Fell with Glenridding & Ullswater to the left. These pictures were being taken in between showers therefore please excuse the quality

Looking ahead to Thornthwaite Crag....or not as the case may be!

But there was some sunshine in places......Just not on us!   The Fairfield Fells on the left and the Helvellyn Fells centre and right

Rest Dodd and The Knott

Looking back along the ridge to Gray Crag

Another band of rain spills over the Fairfield Fells

Thornthwaite Crag beacon. We sheltered behind the wall here as another band of rain passed over

When I was here 3 days ago I was walking in glorious sunshine.

From the beacon we made our way down the rough path to Threshthwaite Mouth. In between showers I managed to capture a few images. This is looking down Threshthwaite Cove to Pasture Beck.

Brock Crags & Place Fell from Threshthwaite Mouth

The slopes of Gray Crag. Shortly after this picture was taken the rain came again but heavier than before and it never stopped all the way back to the car. A pity really I was hoping to get some pictures of Raven Crag and the waterfalls on the way back.
