It's a month since we added a "Wainwright" to our total due mainly to Edith not being able to accompany me on the walks, so today we set out with the intention of adding to our total. Our twin targets would be Red Screes and Middle Dodd which lay on the western side of the Kirkstone Pass. We were parked up and ready for walking by 8:30am at Miller Bridg, Ambleside. The initial part of our route was up the steep Kirkstone road for a short while until we were able to access the fells at GR: NY385 053.
Miller Bridge at Ambleside
It was a beautiful morning and I couldn't resist this view of the Fairfield Horseshoe from Rothay Park
and looking to Red Screes from the same place
As we walked up the Kirkstone road this gate gave a good foreground to the view of Wansfell Pike
On the fells now with Low Pike and High Pike in front of Heron Pike and Great Rigg
A look back to a still peacefull Windermere
To the west though the clouds were building up with the summit of Wetherlam hidden here
Just before the summit I got this picture of the Kirkstone Pass summit approx 1000 feet below
Red Screes summit
Edith on Red Screes
Dave on Red Screes
The cloud was spilling over to the south but the higher Fairfield and Helvellyn ridges seemed to be keeping us in the clear
Middle Dodd with Brotherswater behind
Looking towards the Troutbeck valley
Red Screes summit tarn. From here we took a descending path to Middle Dodd
Middle Dodd summit cairn with Place Fell and the Angletarn Pikes behind
Looking back to Red Screes
and across to the knobbly summit of Little Hart Crag with the cloud covering the Fairfield fells
Looking E'ward over St. Raven's Edge to Froswick, Ill Bell and Yoke
and our way ahead. Looking down to the top of the Scandale Pass. Our route would be of our own making.
But first the summit pictures.....Edith on Middle Dodd
and Dave
Approaching the top of the Scandale Pass and looking down into the top of Patterdale
And our return route to Ambleside, down the Scandale valley
Looking up to High Bakestones as we descended into Scandale
The weather was starting to close in now. I just managed to get this picture of the large Scandale sheepfold before we had to hurriedly put our waterproofs on. From here we went down to the sheepfold for our "butties". Notice how the bracken is changing colour......Autumn is on the way
The weather improved as we descended and I managed this view of Scandale
Edith wanted me to include this view, it actually looked a lot better. I think its the area on the map marked as White Howe/ Pinch Crags
Nearing Ambleside we passed the delightful High Sweden Bridge. This was my last picture, we returned to Ambleside for a nice pot of tea and a scone before returning to the car.
