Route: | Buck Haw Brow - Feizor - Little Stainforth - Stainforth Force - Little Stainforth - Giggleswick Scar - Buck Haw Brow |
I was by myself again today (Edith visiting brother), so I took the opportunity for another trip to the Western Dales. This is only a shortish walk and the paths are very good to find and to walk upon.
Looking back down to the garage at the top of Buck Haw Brow from where I accessed the fellside. There is a lay-by right by the start of the walk but I parked up about 1/4 mile to the right of the garage.
My route was from an old book that I had found a few days ago. Its by Mick North and called "Settle and the Three Peaks". The route initially takes you to the small hamlet of Feizor.
Approaching Feizor with Oxenber Wood behind.
"It's not the weekend is it Billy?"......"I thought they only came by here at the weekend"
From Feizor I took the part to Little Stainforth. Here I am looking back to Feizor
The path runs past Pot Scar (left) and Smearsett Scar (right). This is taken looking back to where I came from.
And from the same spot looking to Pen-y-ghent and Ribblesdale
And across to Fountains Fell
As I progressed to Little Stainworth this old slurry wagon made an interesting foreground to Pen-y-ghent
Approaching Little Stainforth with Stainforth across the valley
I made a slight diversion to go down to the River Ribble and see Stainforth Force.
The bridge at Stainforth. From here I went back to Little Stainforth to carry on the walk
Looking back to Little Stainforth farm with Pen-y-ghent
My route ahead
Looking across to Stainforth with Fountains Fell behind
and to Pen-y-ghent
On route to Giggleswick Scar the path passes this curiousity. Mick North in his book describes it as " a circular, stone lined, dry pond" It does look natural but it as concentric rings etched in the surface which you can just see........puzzling
Added: 5th September -- I have been advised that this is probably an old "Dew Pond"
Giggleswick Scar summit cairn with Ingleborough behind
and with Pen-y-ghent behind
Looking back along the ridge with Settle below
and along the ridge towards Ingleborough
and I could never leave my favourite out!
From the summit cairn I dropped down onto this path which would take me back to my starting point
Nearly back and looking back along Giggleswick Scar
and finally back to my starting point.
Next Walk: 6th September 2007 -- Pen-y-ghent from Helwith Bridge
Last Walk: 1st September 2007 -- Red Screes and Middle Dodd from Ambleside
