Route:   Helwith Bridge - Long Lane - Pen-y-ghent - Hull Pot - Selgill Holes - Horton - Helwith Bridge

Edith was given the choice of locations today and plumped for Pen-y-ghent. I had been up there about 3 weeks ago from Horton so today I decided to do it from Helwith Bridge. The route from Helwith Bridge initially takes you up a walled lane named aptly Long Lane. This track meets up eventually with the Pennine Way at Churn Milk Hole before ascending the southern end of Pen-y-ghent. From the summit we took the Pennine Way down before diverting first to Hull Pot and then over Whitber Hill to Sell Gill Holes. From there we took the Ribble Way down to Horton. After visiting the cafe we carried on the Ribble Way back to Helwith Bridge for a welcome pint.

We parked on the grass verge at Helton Bridge on a rather misty morning but with hopes of a fine day.

Looking back to Helton Bridge from our route up Long Lane. The old flooded quarry is now a Trout fishery.

Arcow Quarry which as taken quite a large chunk out of the Moughton fellside

Our first view of Pen-y-ghent. You can see the walled lane leading up on the right side of the picture.

A couple of disinterested locals as we passed by

From higher up the track looking across to a cloud topped Ingleborough with Horton Quarry in mid picture.

There were plenty of these little fellows about but not many were as accomodating as this one

Approaching the end of Long Lane now and Pen-y-ghent is still a little shy

This is where our path joined the Pennine Way which can be seen here descending to Dale Head in Silverdale before rising again onto Fountains Fell

A look back to the way we had come

Our path up the southern end of Pen-y-ghent

Edith on Pen-y-ghent with Ingleborough in the distance

Dave on Pen-y-ghent

Looking across Ribblesdale to Ingleborough and Whernside the other 2 of the Yorkshire Dales 3 Peaks

Hhhmmm........Ediths route finding is getting better!

But it's not that hard to find your way down on this path!!

On the way down a look across at the Pen-y-ghent Pinnacle

We went to have a look at Hull Pot

But after the dry spell there wasn't much water in sight

A look back at Pen-y-ghent from our path over Whitber Hill

and to Plover Hill

Descending to Sell Gill holes with Ingleborough in the distance. This would be the outward leg of the walk completed. The homeward leg will be done in Part 2 later.
