Route:   Patterdale - Arnison Crag - Trough Head - Birks - St. Sunday Crag - Deepdale Hause - Grisedale Tarn - Patterdale

What a fantastic days walking!  Days like these linger in the mind long after the legs fail. With a good forecast given we set off just before 8am and were parked up and ready to walk for 9-15am. From Patterdale we made our way up Arnison Crag. The path up alongside the wall was a bit slippy in places with the overnight rain but caused no problems. As we gained height the views down Ullswater opened up and gave us plenty of excuses to stop and admire them. However we soon reached the summit of Arnison Crag from where we could see our route towards Birks. This took us around the top of Trough Head before following an old wall up to the ridge from where it was a quiet stroll to the summit. We then followed the ridge SW'ly to the summit of St. Sunday Crag which would be our final summit of the day. We descended to the col at Deepdale Hause and then down a slanting path to Grisedale Tarn. After our "butty stop" we made the relatively gentle descent back down Grisedale to Patterdale.

Taken into the sun from St.Sunday Crag and looking to Fairfield and Cawk Cove

Looking towards Wrynose with Seat Sandal straight ahead.

Dollywaggon Pike, High Crag and Nethermost Pike from St. Sunday Crag

Nethermost Pike and Helvellyn from St. Sunday Crag

Looking down to Gavel Pike with an array of summits which include Beda Fell, Angletarn Pikes, Brock Crags, The Nab, Rest Dodd, The Knott, Rampsgill Head, High Raise and Wether Hill.

A little further to the right brings the Hartsop above How ridge into view with Hartsop Dodd, Gray Crag and the High Street behind

And to the left Place Fell with Beda Fell behind and Loadpot Hill further back.

We are now descending to the col of Deepdale Hause and looking down to Grisedale Tarn with Seat Sandal behind. From the col we took a path slanting down to the tarn.

Again taken into the sun but showing the ridge path ahead over Cofa Pike to Fairfield.

Looking down into Deepdale

Taken from where we left the ridge to descend to Grisedale Tarn showing Cofa Pike

As we descended the view down Grisedale began to open up.

This path although a little loose in it's initial stage becomes a delightful way down to the tarn.

Down to the tarn now and time for our "butties" with a look back to St. Sunday Crag.

Looking across the tarn to Seat Sandal

Walking down the delightful Grisedale valley we paused at Ruthwaite Lodge and the waterfalls coming down out of Ruthwaite Cove.

Ruthwaite Lodge

It's a long way down Grisedale at the end of a walk but with these views who cares!

Looking across the valley to Braesteads

Looking back up the valley

Looking over to Keldas

Back to the tarmac lane and looking to Place Fell

The colours are fantastic but they'll soon be gone so don't linger folks ......get here quick

Grisedale Bridge

Arnison Crag from Patterdale

And finally back to the car at the end of a great day.
