Route: | High Nibthwaite - Brock Barrow - Low Light Haw - High Light Haw - Arnsbarrow Hill - Arnsbarrow Tarn - Top o' Selside - High Nibthwaite |
Our intention today was to have a short walk and to try to capture some late Autumnal colours in the Coniston Water area of the Lake District. We left the car near to High Nibthwaite which is on the eastern side of Coniston Water at the southern end. The outward leg of the walk although on low fells is quite hard going at times. Paths are narrow and numerous and although the bracken now poses now problems the heather makes the going quite hard at times. We had looked at Wainwrights route in his Outlying Fells book and decided to stay to that for the most part apart from a slight diversion to Arnsbarrow Hill and Arnsbarrow Tarn.
Looking across Coniston Water from where we left the car
Looking down onto High Nibthwaite from the path to Brock Barrow
Brock Barrow....This is Aw's "nameless summit". The path AW suggests is the diagonal one. We walked past this and ascended from a little further along the path
Looking back down our ascent route. It was every bit as steep as the AW path, the use of hands and heather was needed at times.
Nearing the summit and looking down into the Crake valley
The summit cairn on Brock Barrow with the Coniston Fells behind. The summit is quite unique in that there is a wall completely encircling it approximately 0.2 miles in diameter.
Looking down to the foot of Coniston Water and the start of the River Crake with Black Combe in the distance
Looking across Coniston Water to Beacon Fell
and along the water towards the Coniston Fells. From the summit we made our way to what is know as the "second cairn" from where a better view of Coniston is possible
The Coniston Fells from the second cairn
Looking along the undulating ridge to Selside
"Guardians of the Fells" 3 Swaledales look down on Allen Tarn
Looking across Park Nab to Beacon Fell
From the second cairn our route would take us westerly to Low Light Haw

We had diverted from the Wainwright route in the Outlying Fells book to visit the summit of Arnsbarrow Hill

From Arnsbarrow Hill we headed N'wards to Arnsbarrow Tarn before turning W'ward to Selside
Looking down on the tarn as we ascended Selside
The RAF were out & about today. This is what I call the "Trainer".....It's not one of the jets that scream through the valleys.
Update: I am told that it is a "Tucano" --- Thank you Sheila from Gosforth
