Just a short walk along the River Wenning today , foolowing it downstream from High Bentham on one bank to Low Bentham with the return along the other bank fished off with a short easy climb up Cowslip Hill. The area lies between the northern edge of the Forest of Bowland and the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. For more information on the area click HERE ....it will open in a new window.

The River Wenning is not a mighty river, it is fed mainly by three becks, Clapham Beck which drains the easter side of Ingleborough, Austick Beck from Crummackdale in the YDNP and Keasden Beck from the fells in the Forest of Bowland. It makes it's way westwards through High & Low Bentham and Wennington before arriving at Hornby where it discharges into the River Lune.

High Bentham.

The River Wenning from Bentham Bridge. After the recent dry spell there wasn't too much water flowing today

The initial part of the walk takes you through the caravan park on well marked tracks

Primroses

The silhouette of Ingleborough shows to the North East across the river

Wild Garlic

A look back as we are about to reach the point where we leave the river.

Cloudsbank. From here we walked down into Low Bentham

Low Bentham. From here we took a path on the opposite side of the river upstream.

Passing a Trout Farm with the aereators in action

The young lady on the opposite bank was from the Enviromental Agency taking samples.

Mayflowers

Ewe'd be warm wearing these coats!!!!

Back at High Bentham we decided to go up to the church and over the delightfully named Cowslip Hill.

St. Margaret's Church

Cowslip Hill was well blessed with Mayflowers but not a single Cowslip did we see.

And finally....Back to the car. Isn't that a lovely sign.....it's the word FREE that makes it so.
