A late start today as I was at the doctors at 10am for my fortnightly blood test. However with the car loaded up we were still parked up at Clapham for 11am and soon walking. Our route took us up to Thwaite Lane and onto Norber to visit the "erratics". From there we climbed up onto Thwaite Scars and followed the ridge along to Long Top. From there we descended to Crummack Farm and walked down one of my favourite dales valleys to Austwick from where we returned along field paths to Clapham.
We left the car at Clapham at the roadside. The footbridge over Clapham Beck.
Our path goes around the church and through two tunnels as it rises.
Ingleborough from Thwaite Lane
We left Thwaite Lane to make our way over to Robin Proctor's Scar
A look towards Smearsett Scar and Wharfe Wood where I was walking the other day.
Climbers on Robin Proctor's Scar
The stunted tree still survives. Just past here our path rises to the right of Robin Proctor's Scar (signposted) to Norber
One of the erratics....The sandstone boulder is not from this area. They come from cliffs about 0.75 miles away to the north. They were transported here by a glacier about 15,000 years ago. Over the remaining period the limestone in the area as been slowly dissolved away by acid soil-water. The limestone under the erratics however was protected from this and leaves them stood on pedastals some up to 60cms high.
From the erratics we made our way up onto Thwaite Scars
As we gained height and headed northwards Pen Y Ghent started to appear from behind Moughton
And to the west Ingleborough
We eventually reached the cairn at Long Scar from where this was taken
Long Scar
The gentle descent into Crummackdale
Crummack Farm
From the farm we took the track down the valley
A small diversion took us....
To my favourite spot.....It is called the Wash Dub Field and in times long past the beck was dammed to make a pool and the sheep were washed to remove parasites. This was done in late Spring and Autumn.
Heath Spotted-orchid.....I think
A look to Norber as we make our way to Austwick
A cottage at Town Head near Austwick
The Gamecock at Austwick.
Just as I was about to take the next picture we heard a noise coming from behind us. It was just a case of point & shoot as quickly as possible. I have ben informed by Sheila from the Gosforth area that it is a Hercules C130 Transport plane. She says that there is one privately owned around her area......wonder if it's the same one.
The start of the return along the field paths to Clapham
Nearly there....This is the farm behind the car park at Clapham
And finally....back to the car
