It's Easter Sunday, the weather is gorgeous and you just know that travelling through the Lake District will be horrendous. However I have been wanting to do this walk again for some time so we set off from home around 07:30 and were parked up and walking for 08:45 having first stopped off at Brown Howe for a few pictures.
Route Map
Before we leave home however there are jobs to be done, which in Ediths case includes feeding her latest adoption. This is "Lucky", a ringed pigeon, the ring number of which I have posted on a couple of pigeon forums but with no reply. When this picture was taken it had been with us for about two weeks. At the time of writing this, five weeks later we haven't seen it for a day or two, but as she was seen doing what pigeons do naturally we are not sure where she may be.
As always when heading this way I couldn't resist stopping at Brown Howe for a look down Coniston Water.....
......and of course you have to look up the water. Not a bad view eh!!
Looking across the lake but the sun gets in the act a bit.
We left the car at the roadside near Sunny Bank with this view of Anne Riggs across the road.
Taking the route of the Cumbria Way which leads down to the Lakeside.
Looking down Coniston Water from Torver Landing.
It's difficult to keep the sun out of the picture at times.
The path is easy walking with no problems.
The water level after a dry winter and spring is very low.
Walking through Torver Common Wood.
The Eastern Fells of Fairlield & Helvellyn dominate the views at the head of the lake.
Progress is slow as there always seems to be another shot.
Howthaite Landing.
Although it's low it is not as low as it was last year in June when we were here. Then the 4-legged support was also out of the water.
Coniston Old Man towers above the lake.
Our plan was to carry on as far as Coniston Hall. As we got nearer the number of people around increased.
The campsite was a mass of tents and cars.....after all it is Easter weekend.
Coniston Hall. This is where, after a drink we retraced our steps for a while.
The lakes is coming to life now as people pursue the various activities which take there fancy.
One of the Coniston Launches approaches as we leave the lake shore to make our way up onto Torver Back Common.
Our path rises gently through the woods but before reaching Brackenbarrow Farm we take a track off on the left.
Below us the path up from the lake can be seen as we make our way up onto the common.
It is a wonderful viewpoint up here.
Dow Crag & Coniston Old Man appear above the trees.
There are a number of paths across the common. Pick one and see how you go or just investigate the area yourself.
The water of Long Moss come into view with Beacon Fell beyond.
Long Moss.
Looking down on Long Moss and back to where we have come from.
Coniston Old Man
Brown Pike, Buck Pike and Dow Crag.
Easter Sunday and not a soul at the delightful Kelly Hall Tarn. Hard to believe it's only around 450feet from the road.
Our parking spot as filled up.
Next Walk: 25th April 2011 - Forest of Bowland - From Hornby to Wray to see the scarecrows
Last Walk: 22nd April 2011 - Arnside & Silverdale AONB - 50 Up on Warton Crag.
