I was by myself today and was tempted to head for Lakeland as it such a glorious morning. However I needed to be back for early afternoon and hopefully there will be a visit to Lakeland tomorrow, so it was just a short drive to Silverdale for this walk up Arnside Knott and King William's Hill to the Pepper Pot.

Route Map

After leaving the car at the roadside near the school I walked back through the village to take a path across the fields to The Cove.

It's another glorious morning as I make my way across the fields. Down the bay is the low lying Outlying Fell of Lakeland of Humphrey Head.

Further to the right beyond the headland of Park Point at Far Arnside is Grange over Sands with another OFL, that being Hampsfell to its right.

A look back over the old fishermen's cottages and Know End Point the power stations at Heysham are in view.

Before long I leave the fields to walk down a narrow lane to The Cove.

The tide is on the ebb and they are only low ones as can be seen from the still dry foreshore.

A look back Unfortunately the acres upon acres of salt marsh are now gone.

I leave my home county of Lancashire here to enter Cumbria. Actually to me it will always be Lancashire north of the Sands.

My path passes through the Caravan Park on my way to Far Arnside.

Leaving the caravan park my path crosses a couple of fields towards Far Arnside.

Arnside Knott

The path across the fields exits onto the road where a few yards to the right I took the lane to Hollins Farm and Heathwaite.

Herdwick lambs at Far Arnside.

The kids were still playing out at Hollins Farm.

A look back as I start the walk up Heathwaite.

The slopes of Heathwaite had a lot of orchids on them.

Peacock Butterfly

After leaving Heathwaite through the gate shown (l) I took the path up the Knott directly ahead.

A short climb took me to the two seats with views across the estuary to Grange and Hampsfell.....

....and back to Silverdale and beyond.

I made my way to the viewpoint for a view over the woods of Heathwaite to the OFL of Humphrey Head.....

.....and over New Barns below to Grange and Hampsfell.

The Coniston Fells over Cartmel Fell....

....Eastern & Far Eastern Fells over the OFL of Whitbarrow.

Looking up the Levens estuary to the Whinfell Ridge.

From the viewpoint it's a short climb to the true summit.....

.....but first a short diversion to the south eastern edge for a view of Ingleborough

Looking down on Arnside Tower and the farm.

The summit trig point.

Lots of Cowslips about on the summit.

The seat with a view.

I descended on the Red Hills path with views across the estuary

This walk gives me everything I now need. Sea, river, hills.

As I descended I made my way to the right hand corner to take the path through the woods to the road near Arnside Tower....

.....where I walked down the farm lane....

.....and up to the tower.

The scree slopes of Arnside Knott from Arnside Tower. From here I took a path up into the top end of the Caravan Park.

Arnside Knott from the Caravan Park.

The route across the park is waymarked and enters the wooded area near the childrens play-park.

A well trodden path through the woods leads to the wall stile (r) from where the path ahead returns to Silverdale via Elmslack or a turn to the left after the stile and a short walk/climb takes you to....

.....The Pepper Pot....built to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria

It's a lovely viewpoint and I spent a while here chatting to a family from Blackpool who were in the area for a few days.....Hope to catch up with Mike, Donna & Clarissa in the area again soon. Edith would love to spoil Oscar the Border Terrier.

It as been a while since I took the path down from the Pepper Pot to Elmslack and I barely recognised the route, there as been so much coppicing going on.

From Elmslack it was a short walk down into Silverdale passing first the Trinity Methodist Church...

....and then St Johns Parish Church near which I was parked.

Next Walk:      28th April 2011 - Lake District - Black Fell and Tarn Hows

Last Walk:       25th April 2011 - Forest of Bowland - Hornby to Wray to see the Scarecrows.
