I was fine after our last walk up Walla Crag but the following morning the pain under my left shoulder blade had returned. I gave it a rest that day instead being rather bored by the baseline tennis that seems to be the norm now at Wimbledon. It was still a bit painful this morning but in the afternoon I couldn't settle and persuaded Edith that this walk wouldn't make it any worse as we could manage with only one rucsac with the coats and water in and that she could have the honour of carrying it leaving me with only the camera. Thanking me for my gentlemanly gesture she agreed and even agreed to make up a couple of buns to have on the way around. There was a slight "frostiness" when I sneaked in the kitchen and purloined one but it was short-lived and we were soon on our way to the start point at Middleton Sands just an handful of miles away.
Route Map
Black Combe from the beach car park at Middleton Sands.
Looking t'other way to the hills of the Forest of Bowland.
Clougha Pike and Ward's Stone as we set off towards the point.
Passing by Sunderland Brows Farm.
A look back across the salt marsh
Soon we are passing The Lane (l) along which we will return, and a few short strides further on we come to the entrance to the grave area (r)
Sambo's Grave.....More Info.....HERE
Always in an impeccable condition and long may it remain that way.
Back to the shore to go to the point,
It's a glorious afternoon, out on the sands there is a wagon & horsebox (l) from which a pony and trap appeared to trot up and down the sands. Just to the right of the horsebox the Devenonshire Dock building at Barrow can just be made out.
It is now approaching 2pm and shortly the Isle of Man boat will be leaving the harbour. Time to find a seat to wait on.
Sitting comfortably......and waiting....
...and then the top half of the superstructure appeared.....FAIL!!
Has she sailed down the fairway the hull started to appear. That white streaking is water as they must be washing the decks after a spillage.
I was puzzled by this picture for a while until I realised that the blurriness was caused by the heat rising from the sands.....that's my excuse anyway.
Looking across the River Lune and over Crook Farm to the Bleasedale Moors....
....and to Clougha and Ward's Stone as we walk around the Point.
Looking up the estuary of the River Lune.
The tides are low at present so the lower foreshore is dry and makes for easier walking.
Looking towards Clougha. The buildings of Lancaster University can just be seen to the left of centre.
Crook Farm.
A look back partly into the sun towards Plover Scar Lighthouse and the Fylde coast.
The Old Hall.
A Haaf Net on the banks of the river. This type of fishing as been in use for around 1,000 years.....More Info.....HERE
Approaching Second Terrace.
Walking along the beach which also serves as the road between First & Second Terrace......Can you spot Ingleborough?
First Terrace......We had walked past here for the pictures above and then returned to take The Lane back to the West Shore.
The pond near Meadow Farm looks very low.
Back on the West Shore and on our way back to the car....
....as we got closer I was wondering if we could make it back before....
....this "Seatruck" vessel passed by.
Back at the car park...
....here she comes, along with a passing 4WD
A look to the Fylde Coast and a familiar landmark is just visible...
.....it's Blackpool Tower, distorted by the heat from the sands. For the Ingleborough spotters it was just above the white boat about a 1/3 in from the right. It's a little clearer in the picture following the one I posed the question on.
